GST Evasion: Chandigarh Immigration Firms Face Scrutiny

Last updated: 30 January 2024

In a proactive move to curb potential tax evasion, six teams from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Department recently conducted raids on multiple immigration firms in the city. Led by Pardeep Rawal, ETO, and directed by Jagdeep Sehgal, AETC, the teams meticulously examined GST returns, business models, past filings, and portal-based data. Additionally, on-site visits were conducted to gather crucial information as part of the investigation.

The raids, conducted with precision, have yielded substantial evidence according to the UT Administration. The findings include a range of documents such as enrollment forms, rent agreements, pen drives, mobile phones, computers, loose documents, dairy notebooks, and registers. Among the notable firms covered in this operation were Canvisa Worldwide, CV Immigration, Akal Overseas Consultancy, and Future Developers in Sector 34.

This recent effort by the GST Department comes on the heels of a previous week's inspection of Dhagey Creations in Sector 38. During that inspection, it was discovered that the taxpayer was operating under the composition scheme instead of regular GST registration.

Authorities emphasize that these measures are part of a broader strategy to seal GST revenue loopholes and ensure strict compliance with tax regulations by businesses. The raids on immigration firms aim to address concerns related to potential tax evasion and establish accountability within the business community.

The comprehensive approach taken by the GST Department, including the scrutiny of business models, filings, and on-site visits, underscores the commitment to maintaining the integrity of the tax system and promoting fair practices among businesses. As investigations progress, the authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to secure GST revenues and maintain a level playing field for businesses across the city.
